IXP Routing Security

An insight into the MANRS Program

MANRS Blog - 6 October 2020

MANRS (Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security) is a global initiative promoted and supported by Internet Society. The goal is to provide crucial fixes to mitigate and reduce the most common routing threats.

MANRS defines different programs for the different actors in the Internet ecosystem, it outlines concrete actions that networks should take to improve the routing security. The programs take into account the different features and behaviours of the Internet actors: originally designed for network operators, MANRS has expanded over the years to also address the needs and concerns of IXPs, CDNs and Cloud Providers.

IXPs play an important role in protecting the Internet and in spreading the voice of routing security. They represent a crucial partnership  in the MANRS community and they contribute to making the Internet a resilient and safer place.

In April 2018, MANRS initiative launched a program and actions entirely dedicated to the community of Internet Exchange Points. With 12 initial participants, today it counts 56 members. The program is designed and drawn up to have a set of community-generated actions that meet the unique needs of IXPs.

The webinar about "IXP routing security" was recorded on 30th September 2020. Bijal Sanghani moderated the session and the two MANRS Virtual/Online Ambassadors Anirdan Datta - Fiber@Home and Flavio Luciani - Namexhighlighted the importance of the initiative by providing an insight into the MANRS IXP program.
